Lifeblood, by Miss Pamela (blood challenge)

Challenge: Blood
Title: Lifeblood
Author: [info]misspamela
Category: Pre-slash
Pairing: Shep/McKay
Rating: G
Summary: Rodney's vital signs are failing. He needs a transfusion. Hurt/Comfort. Except really, really silly.

Huge thanks to [info]elynross for her last-minute beta and hand-holding!

The throbbing started somewhere around Rodney's temples and twisted down the back of his neck. He clenched his teeth, but that only added a fresh surge of pain. Rodney tried to refocus on the reports in front of him. Idiots. Apparently, nobody on his staff had ever heard of spell-check, or the "mythical" backspace key, or even a little something he liked to call "the scientific method".

A sliver of light fell on the papers. "Dark in here," commented a wry voice. The lights brightened noticeably. "Ow, headache, ow, ow," Rodney grumbled. "This is so not the best time."

Major Sheppard leaned against the edge of the lab table. "Did you forget the briefing?"

"Crap, what time is it?"

"About that time."

Rodney massaged his temples. "Tell Elizabeth I'm in the middle of a major medical emergency."

Sheppard frowned. "Are you okay?" He reached out to feel Rodney's forehead.

"I'm sorry, do I look okay?" Rodney swatted his hand away. "Or do I look like a raving, sweating, tense lunatic in the throes of a migraine?"

"Um…the last one."

"That's what I thought." Rodney slumped over on the table, pillowing his head in his arms. He sighed. "We're out of coffee."

"Ah. So it's serious, then."

"If there was one ounce of sarcasm in that remark, I'm going to shoot you in the foot."

"Have you tried tea? Teyla makes a nice—"

"Tea? What are you, my grandmother?"

Sheppard shrugged. "Hey, I'm just trying to help." He reached into his jacket pocket. "Maybe this would do the trick."

For once, Rodney's brain was the last thing to catch up. His nose said, "Coffee!" his eyes said, "Baggie?" and his brain said "Oh my GOD, it is coffee!"

John grinned. "I had a little saved up."

"How much is a little?" Rodney grabbed the bag out of his hands and ran over to the forlorn, empty coffeemaker in the corner.

"Well, maybe more than a little." Sheppard held up his hand warningly. "Just enough to wean you off slowly." He grinned. "I had a feeling you wouldn't be able to hold back."

Rodney dragged his attention away from the slow, fragrant droplets that were sputtering into the pot. "You – yeah? Wow. I'm, um, touched."

Sheppard backed away, holding his hands up. "Hey, just looking out for my team."

Rodney tipped his head to one side and crossed his arms. "Would you save coffee for Teyla?"

"Teyla doesn't drink coffee."

"Tea, whatever."

"Well, it's not like she's going to run out any time soon," Sheppard snorted.

"Okay. So. If Ford—"

"Oh, Ford has plenty of C4."

Rodney tossed a glance at the pot. Half-full. Half-full of coffee that Major Sheppard had just been squirreling away for him. "That's weird," he said.

"What's weird?"

"You, you're weird. I don't quite get you sometimes." Rodney paused, there was something, something about Sheppard's pattern of behavior…jumpy, defensive, oddly affectionate—

Beep! Beeeeep!

Rodney lunged for his cup, momentarily losing his train of thought. The first rush of caffeine was like an orgasm, like a warm fuzzy sweater on a cold day, like a sunrise in his brain…"I think I love you," he said.

"Well, in that case, I'm going to want to barter for the rest." Sheppard smiled, sweet and sharp, and walked out the door.

Through the nose, Rodney decided, wasn't his favorite way to drink coffee.

Eeee! This was a great take on the challenge. Rodney almost getting a clue, and then distracted by coffee, and then *barter*! Yay!

May 5 2005, 10:06:28 UTC 7 years ago

Thanks! I'm not sure why, but coffee was the first thing I thought of when the challenge was issued.

Oh, yay. This was great. Coffee=blood! It *so* does in Rodney's world...

John's giving Rodney his stashed coffee. When he could he could probably buy the whole city with it, considering the fact that everyone else is going into withdrawl too.

It must be love.

*is surrounded by the hearts and flowers*

Also- *smacks Rodney for being a clueless caffeine junkie*

[info]misspamela

May 5 2005, 10:09:16 UTC 7 years ago

Hee! But he only wants to buy Rodney. :)

Thank you!

*giggles* This is so cute! And I feel Rodney's pain -- I know the distress of being coffeeless, and he can't help that he's distracted by the fragrant smell of brewing java!

I'm sure John'll figure out a way to ahem, "barter".

Seriously -- the ep where they talk about running out of cofee was supposed to be funny, but I was thinking "OMG NO COFFEE!!!" the whole time. It was like a horror movie, really.

Thanks, babe!

So...I don't actually drink coffee. It makes me ill and shaky (plus, by the time I resort to coffee it's already too late) and I come pre-caffeinated. But I love this story. Yay.

Oh, this was just perfect all the way through! From the forlorn coffeemaker to the what are you, my grandmother? to the I'm going to want to barter for the rest!! I just loved it! And I can so empathize with Rodney. And John, just looking out for his team. Mmm-hmm, right. Well done!!

Sweet! I liked, very much so.

The first rush of caffeine was like an orgasm, like a warm fuzzy sweater on a cold day, like a sunrise in his brain.

You know, that's so lovely it brought tears to my eyes. ::grabs coffee cup::

[info]misspamela

May 6 2005, 13:14:54 UTC 7 years ago

Oh, most definitely! The sad thing is that I was writing this at 11:30 at night and couldn't drink any of the good stuff for inspiration. *g*

Thank you!

"I think I love you," he said.

"Well, in that case, I'm going to want to barter for the rest." Sheppard smiled, sweet and sharp, and walked out the door.

Hee!! That was so cute! Rodney going through caffeine withdrawal, and John saving some coffee for him. And those last lines almost made me snort through my nose. *vbg*

*wipes away tear*
Oh, was this about blood? My kind of blood then (even though he should give tea a try,it's easy to get just as addicted to that). Dear oddly affectionate Sheppard and jumpy McKay. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmh, bartering. Mmmmmmh, love.

[info]misspamela

May 6 2005, 13:16:50 UTC 7 years ago

Yay, thank you!

Hee! Yes, yes we do.

May 5 2005, 15:26:56 UTC 7 years ago

This absolutely made my morning wothwhile. It's lucky that my coffee wasn't done brewing yet, though, or when I hit the last line I might have copied Rodney's actions. Thank you!

[info]misspamela

May 6 2005, 13:19:26 UTC 7 years ago

Oh, yay! Thank you so much!

[info]sisabet

May 5 2005, 15:28:53 UTC 7 years ago

Oh! I need coffee, too! Rodney just solved my headache problem! Is there NOTHING he can't do?

I liked this a lot - so cute and yes, for Rodney, a case could be made that coffee-withdrawal would be a hurt/comfort fic. I think that is just brilliant.

That and the line about Ford having plenty C4. Hee!

[info]misspamela

May 6 2005, 13:20:24 UTC 7 years ago

Hee! Thank you!

Mmm...coffee would be good right about now...*wanders off*

[info]aithine

May 5 2005, 16:02:02 UTC 7 years ago

Heee! Poor caffeine-deprived Rodney, his brain's not quite working on enough cylinders to figure out what's up. *bg*

Through the nose, Rodney decided, wasn't his favorite way to drink coffee.

And yet it's how I just drank mine. Great story!
