'Secure', by Moonloon (Enclosed Spaces Challenge)

I'd been working on a longer story, but I think it died. Then I had one of those 'but what about all the stuff on Atlantis that you need a gene for?' thoughts. This was written in around 15 minutes, it's a mini-McShep fic.

One of John Sheppard's least favourite gene-related activities was releasing idiots, sorry, scientists from the secure labs on the lower levels. Zelenka was the worst offender; he and Rodney would go down there, all geeked out over something, and Rodney would open the doors. Then a couple of hours later Rodney would start getting pissy and remember he needed to eat every four hours, and leave Zelenka in the lab. The lab with a door that only opened if you had the Ancient gene.

At which point Zelenka would remember he'd left an important tool somewhere else, and couldn't get out.

Or in this case, he needed to go to the bathroom, and the rooms on this level didn't have any handy balconies to pee off.

"Sorry," Zelenka said, scuttling off down the corridor.

"No problem," John said, with a scowl. "It's what I'm here for."

"Honestly, I was only gone for ten minutes." Rodney was standing at the other end of the corridor eating a granola bar. "You'd think he could have held it for a bit longer."

John grinned. "Ah, but the last time you left him in one of the secure labs, you got distracted by... what was it again?"

"Strange neutrino flux analysis in the solar flare statistics."

"Right, and you left him locked in there for six hours."

Rodney popped the last of his snack into his mouth and nodded. "Oops."

"Don't talk with your mouth full," John said, as Rodney walked toward him.

Rodney grinned suddenly, sending happy little shivers up John's back. "I have around a dozen lines I could use here, but they all sound pornographic."

"Really?" John knew he had the slightly loopy grin on his face that made him look like he had the IQ of an eggplant. Oddly enough, he didn't seem to care.

Rodney walked past him, into the lab. "The good thing about Radek not being able to get out of these labs is that he can't get back into them either."

Sheppard sent a mental 'lock' to the door as Rodney grabbed his shirt and pulled him inside.

Evil to Radek, but Rodney and John got laid, so it evens out ;)

That was fun!! I liked John's loopy grin and Rodney reminding him that Zelenka couldn't get back in, lol.

There are so many opportunities for the guys with the gene to play practical jokes on the ones that don't. Just thinking about it give me a case of the muah ha has.

*imagines poor Zelenka standing outside the door going, "Guys? Guys? Hello! Anyone?" like an ignored little brother* Aw! Poor Radek having to put up with these two. Hee! Nice idea.

You can just see that happening, can't you? Rodney gets sidetracked for 'five minutes' and it turns into six hours.

Heh, excellent ;-)

Also, I could so hear the line:

"No problem," John said, with a scowl. "It's what I'm here for."

And loved the ending a lot ;-)

Oh, this is so cute! Though I feel bad for poor Zelenka, subject to their whims... *g*

Yep, and I bet all the bathrooms on that level are gene-activated too.

You just made me laugh out loud at Zelenka and now I feel awful, like I've kicked a puppy. Aside from the lifetime of guilt and anguish it has given me, this was totally great: lively and spicy-sweet from beginning to end. The voices were dead-on for me, and I am weirdly in love with Rodney's line of technobabble. :)

March 14 2005, 17:37:49 UTC 7 years ago

Yeah, it's bad to pick on Zelenka. He's impossible to be mean to. Unless you're Ford, of course.

I'm terrible at technobabble, I did some very basic astrophysics at uni, but can't remember a single word of it. I tend to type things like 'solar flare statistics' into Google and C&P what it spits out ;)

haha, so cute! IQ of an eggplant, snork.

"Honestly, I was only gone for ten minutes." Rodney was standing at the other end of the corridor eating a granola bar.

So Rodney, poor Zelenka, thank you.

When you think about it, the SGA team totally got lucky that the Ancients didn't just go ahead and key every last single thing to respond to the gene, cuz, duh, doesn't everyone have one?
